US Health Care System – A Disease Management System

The US does not have a health care system; we have a disease-management system that is dependent on expensive drugs and invasive surgeries. It’s a system rooted in an ideal of maximized profits, opposed to helping people maintain or regain their health. And while “Obamacare” was an attempt to correct the problem, it did anything but. It hasn’t focused in on the true problem – the health of the American population.

Head over and read Its Time To Change American Disease Management Into A Health Fostering System by Dr Mercola.

Dr Mercola recently produced a documentary on disease management and what it means to us, airing on CNN in early March, watch the trailer:

Forks Over Knives – What Do You Know About The Food You Eat?

The feature film Forks Over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods.

When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination.

To Catch A Dollar Movie Premier One Night In Denver Only!

I volunteer for a group called Results, and our goal is to alleviate poverty nationally and internationally through political and social will.  We are sponsoring this wonderful documentary on poverty in the US that will be premiering across the nation for ONE NIGHT ONLY, on March 31st at 7:30pm.

This documentary is on Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Prize winning economist, founder of Microcredit loans and Grameen bank.  Talks about what prevents poor people from getting ahead.  Grameen Bank was built on the radical notion that if you loan poor women money within the context of peer support, not only will they repay, but they’ll sustain the bank and elevate their communities in the process. With millions of microloans to rural entrepreneurs in developing countries, Grameen is now audaciously importing its methods to the bastion of first-world capitalism: the U.S.A. First stop: Queens, New York.

Come join us to learn more about poverty and what we can do to alleviate it.  Please help us spread the word!

Hope to see you at the Theatre,

The People Speak

I rented this movie from the library.  It is a beautiful film based on the book: A People’s History of the United States, by Howard Zinn.  Through monologues, this movie captures the speeches of powerful, inspirational leaders that shaped the United States to become the great nation that it is.

From Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, and unknown veterans, union workers, abolitionists and many others that are never discussed in our high school history classes.

Once again, this movie reminds us that social change is only possible through courageous, ordinary people that speak out.

Economics of Happiness

Last Wednesday evening I went to go see the movie, The Economics of Happiness at Green Spaces in Denver.  It was a wonderful evening of like minded individuals gathering together to support a different paradigm.  A paradigm of supporting local businesses and bringing things back home.

There was vegan raw food (amazing), drinks, live music, a handful of interesting vendors, that were around the space and very lively conversations before the movie began.

The movie itself basically reinforced what we already know, that corporate interests are destroying human interests.  The thing that really stuck out for me is how we export just as many food staples (ie: potatoes, corn, rice, tomatoes etc) just as much as we import.  It is actually more expensive to buy locally made products than those that are imported from foreign countries due to all the subsidies that are granted.

This is sheer madness.

Put this on your to watch list I would definitely recommend it.  http://www.theeconomicsofhappiness.org/

Iron Jawed Angels

Winner 2005 Golden Globe Award for actress Anjelica Huston

Katja von Garnier’s “Iron Jawed Angels” tells the remarkable and little-known story of a group of passionate and dynamic young women, led by Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and her friend Lucy Burns (Frances O’Connor), who put their lives on the line to fight for American women’s right to vote.

This true story has startling parallels to today, as the young activists struggle with issues such as the challenges of protesting a popular President during wartime and the perennial balancing act between love and career. Utilizing a pulsing soundtrack, vivid colors, and a freewheeling camera, Katja von Garnier’s (“bandits”) driving filmmaking style shakes up the preconceptions of the period film and gives history a vibrant contemporary energy and relevance.
