We need to get Rush Limbaugh off Armed Forces Radio – Sign Petition

I was sickened this morning to hear that one of our soldiers shot 9 adults and 7 children in Afghanistan.   I was also sickened to hear about the burning of the Koran, as well as seeing pictures of US soldiers urinating on the dead Afghan bodies.

But with hate talk that is constantly being spewed by Rush Limbaugh, that is actually being broadcasted to our soldiers via Armed Forces Radio, it’s no wonder some of our soldiers act out.

Rush Limbaugh should not be allowed to spew hate from our own military’s network.

Please sign the petition to get Rush Limbaugh off the Armed Forces Network:

Study: Universal Healthcare Saves Taxpayers Money in the Long Run

Republicans like to go on and on about how much healthcare is going to cost taxpayers.  Well here’s an interesting study done by UCIrvine , in which they did a case study on low income people who were enrolled in a community based health care program.

Working with researchers from the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, Neumark tracked the emergency room, inpatient, outpatient and primary-care service utilization of about 26,000 previously uninsured Richmond residents between 2000 and 2007 whose household incomes fell 200 percent  below the federal poverty level. Qualified enrollees were granted health insurance and assigned a primary-care provider for one year. They were required to proactively re-enroll for subsequent annual coverage.

Normally what happens, is that low income people can’t afford primary care.  Many of their issues could be taken care of if they had a primary care doctor .  But, because they don’t have the option to visit a primary care doctor, their health issues balloon, and become emergency care visits.   Hospitals are required to treat emergency visits, and those emergency visits are not only more costly, but the taxpayers on the ones who pay the bill.

The study found that primary-care visits for patients who enrolled continuously over three years rose from 1.06 in year one to 1.60 annually, while emergency-room visits fell from 1.02 in year one to 0.74 by year three. Costs per visit for both inpatients and outpatients also decreased, as did the length of inpatient stays. On average, total healthcare costs per enrollee per year for this subset were cut nearly in half – from $8,899 in year one to $4,569 in year three. Overall costs per enrollee per year for all participants with at least one year of enrollment declined from $7,604 to $4,726.

In a different study, it’s interesting to learn that half of all foreclosures have a medical cause, and that 1.5 million Americans per year are at risk of losing their homes due to foreclosures.   And we all know the impact the housing market has had on our economy.

And finally, since there are so many discussion on birth control lately, it might be interesting to learn that taxpayers end up paying $12 billion dollars annually on unintended pregnancies ( taxpayer spending on Medicaid-subsidized medical care).   And on a side not, those unintended pregnancies account for 90% of all abortions.

If the Republicans really cared about lowering the number of abortions and lowering the taxpayer’s obligations, and helping the economy, wouldn’t it just be easier to  offer universal healthcare which includes birth control?

Jobs Created During the Obama Administration

In Romney’s speeches around the country, he often states that Obama did not cause the recession, but he made it worse.
( See Fact Check ).   Romney was also quoted on Fox News saying:

“This is a president who lost more jobs during his tenure than any president since Hoover. This is 2 million jobs that he lost as President. “

Additionally, the Republicans love say how much government has grown under Obama’s leadership.

The above chart should dispute those statements.

As you can see, jobs were taking a free fall during the Bush years.  Then, once Obama took office in 2009, and once the 2009 stimulus became law, job loss declined over time, and make a turnaround in the Spring of 2010.  For the next 21 months, there has been a growth of 2.4 million jobs in the private sector.

Here’s one of Paul Krugman’s charts:

As Paul Krugman states:

Does this look to you like a president who “lost jobs”, or like a president who inherited an economy in free fall? You can accuse Obama of not doing enough to promote recovery — and I have (although the biggest villain here was Romney’s own party). But to claim that Obama caused the job loss is indefensible.

And what is interesting, is that the private sector has been growing, while the government has been shedding jobs due to cuts.  In fact, Obama wants to shrink government even further by merging 6 agencies that deal with trade and commerce.  The White House says 1,000 to 2,000 jobs would be cut through that merger, but the administration would do so through attrition.

Rachel Maddow says

Not only has Obama shrunk the size the government, but he has reduced it more than Republican hero Ronald Reagan ever did. In 2011, President Obama became the biggest tax cutter in American history. Obama has cut more taxes than any other president in American history. Obama’s move to reorganize and cut government overlap represents who this president really is, and how he governs.

So isn’t this interesting?   The Republican arguments just don’t work.  Government jobs are declining and private sector jobs are growing.  Obama’s stimulus plan did work.

We still have a long way to go before we get to pre-recession numbers.  It would be nice to see another stimulus plan go through, but with today’s congress, that doesn’t seem likely.

Let’s Talk about US Energy Policy

The GOP is attacking Solyndra, and making it a key point to kill Obama’s energy policies.

This indeed was a $500 million loan guarantee that did flop.  As we all know, not all investments work out.   However, we do need to put this in perspective.  For instance, the GOP wants to keep offering subsidies for dirty fossil fuels.  In fact, federal subsidies for dirty fossil fuels were $70.2 billion between 2002 to 2008.   ( See chart below ).

Now the GOP wants to build a keystone Pipeline, which will tie us for another generation to fossil fuel, helping slow the switch to wind and solar.

Here are some things you may not know about wind and solar energy.

Reuters reported that  the solar and wind deals in the US netted a record $53.5 billion last year, which is a 40% jump from 2010.  Additionally, the total investment in renewable energy broke the record too, of $260 billion.

The US currently only generates 4% of its electricity from renewables.   This figure needs to increase, but this will only happen when we change public policy.

Let’s take a look at Germany for a moment, and look at their energy policy.   With a population of 82 million, they are the highest energy consuming country in Europe.

Currently, Germany generates 20.8 % of its electricity from renewables.  Their goal is to have 35% of their energy coming from renewable sources by 2035.   Right now, there are over 370,000 people in Germany who are employed in the renewable energy sector.

After Chernobyl, Germany passed a new energy law which made it so that the public utilities had to accept green energy from suppliers ( investors in green energy ) at a fixed price.  The public utilities also had the obligation to take renewable energy into the grid.

The result was that the law created a new market.   Because of the guaranteed price for the supplier, it provided an incentive where the more productive the suppliers are, the more they profit.  That means the law is a strong incentive for technological improvement.

So how can we change energy policy in the US?

To start, we need to end Big Oil’s corruption in Congress.   The oil industry has contributed $93 million to sitting members in Congress so that they can continue to receive their subsidies.  You can help to end this corruption by going to http://act.350.org/survey/refs-in-district-hosts/   to see how you can help.

Enlightening Interview on Elizabeth Warren’s Research

Elizabeth Warren has done a lot of research on the plight of the middle class as a professor at Harvard University,  long before the financial crisis happened.

Interestingly, before Elizabeth started her research, she was a Republican, and she was out to find out why there was such an increase in bankruptcies in our country.  She started her research believing that people were over spending on eating out, buying expensive luxuries such as home entertainment centers, etc.

Elizabeth’s research results surprised her, and it has changed her viewpoints.  I think you will find this 2004 interview very enlightening.

Bill Moyers on Plutocracy and Democracy in America

Bill Moyers signs off his last broadcast with an editorial discussion on why plutocracy ( the rule of the rich ) and democracy don’t mix.   Wait until you hear him read several excerpts from Citigroup’s equity strategy on plutocracy.

Keep Wall Street Occupied

Here’s a fun action step that you can take!

Do you get a lot of junk mail? If your mail is like mine, it’s full of credit card offers. These offers are from the same banks that ruined our economy.

In each of these offers, you’ll find a free postage paid envelope. The banks are only charged postage when you send the envelope back.

So all you simply do, is take the envelope, lick it, seal it, and send it back.

You can mail the envelope empty, you can put a message in the envelope, or you can make the envelope heavier, by filling it up with a wood chips, or something bulky. This will cause the bank to pay more postage.

This isn’t really about running up the postage bill on the big banks, although that’s a nice side effect. The real effect of this is to force banks to react to us. If they start getting hundreds and thousands of weird responses to their credit card applications, well they’re going to have to have meetings. They going to have to develop new procedures and every hour banks spend reacting to us is an hour banks don’t spend lobbying Congress on how to screw us. The banks will have to stop and take notice, as this will impact their daily operations, and possibly open up new discussions.

And as a side benefit, you’ll of course also be helping out the post office, as they need the money.
